  • Former GlaxoSmithKline CEO Andrew Witty has been selected to head the UK's Accelerated Access Pathway for conditions such as cancer, dementia and diabetes, as reported London South East Friday.

  • The scheme is designed to make new drugs available sooner by reducing the time needed for financial approval prior to NHS use.

  • Under the scheme, therapies will be granted accelerated approval in exchange for drugmaker delivering "additional value for the taxpayer."

  • A new unit within NHS will be created to negotiate cost-effective deals.
