Major drugmakers are raising prices - (The Wall Street Journal via NewsPoints Desk)

  • According to Rx Solutions, 20 drugmakers raised the prices on more than 40 prescription drugs this week despite continued scrutiny of the practice, The Wall Street Journal reported.

  • In particular, B. Braun Medical increase the prices of more than a dozen products, including a 50% price hike for the antibiotic cefazolin.

  • The price hikes implemented on July 1 averaged 13.1%, up from 7.8% last year.

  • Other price hikes this week included a 5% price increase for GlaxoSmithKline's Zejula and a 10% price increase for Amneal Pharmaceuticals' Unithroid.

  • A GlaxoSmithKline spokesperson, who stressed that the company handles all price increases "thoughtfully and responsibly," said the price increase was the first for Zejula since its launch last year.

  • Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Amneal stated that the price of Unithroid has risen less than the rate of inflation since September 2015.
