According to two reports out from FirstView, medical affairs teams for major HIV treatments may be leaving doctors underwhelmed.
FirstView's Medical Affairs Reputations: HIV (2017) reports for the US and EU5 countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK) compare the teams for Descovy, Genvoya, Isentress, Prezista, Reyataz, Stribild, Triumeq, Truvada and Viread on 12 medical affairs services. The US report also covers the team for Johnson & Johnson's Prezcobix.
Results show that performance and satisfaction scores are neutral to moderate, with no team earning overwhelmingly positive scores. The reports offer several insights into what's keeping scores down, and offer suggestions from respondents on how teams can improve.
US teams should be more active
One problem for US teams may be the number of doctors they see. Half of the 10 teams surveyed in the US report interacted with 60 percent of respondents or less in the past 6 months. Even the most active team barely saw more than 70 percent of respondents. Compare that to the EU5 where all but two teams saw 65 percent of respondents or more, and the most active team saw over 80 percent of respondents.
EU5 teams need targeted improvements
For EU5 teams, sub-par performance on specific medical affairs services is the bigger problem. All nine surveyed teams need to improve at least one service, and some teams need to improve as many as four. In the US, by contrast only four teams need such specific improvements, and they each need to work on a single service.
All teams need to get better at providing information
Asked to suggest ways teams could improve their services, US respondents identified five ways teams could do a better job of providing information - especially various kinds of updates. EU5 respondents identified four such improvements. Respondents in both regions also pointed to a need for teams to improve their medical affairs "attitude," mainly by doing a better job of time management.
