Carbon monoxide improves effectiveness of antibiotic that fights stomach infection, study suggests - (ScienceDaily via NewsPoints Desk)

  • A study published in the journal Organic Letters suggests that carbon monoxide may improve the effectiveness of antibiotics, making bacteria more sensitive to antibiotic medication, ScienceDaily reported.

  • In the study, carbon monoxide was paired with metronidazole and was found to enhance the efficacy of the antibiotic against H. pylori.

  • "We found that if you administer carbon monoxide together with an antibiotic called metronidazole, it can sensitise bacteria toward the same antibiotic by 25-fold," said study author Binghe Wang, adding that "it makes the bacteria much, much more sensitive to the antibiotic."
