GlaxoSmithKline Considers Developing Gonorrhoea Vaccine as Threat Rises - (Bloomberg via NewsPoints Desk)

  • GlaxoSmithKline is considering the possible development of a vaccine against gonorrhoea, Bloomberg reported.

  • Emmanuel Hanon, head of R&D at GlaxoSmithKline's vaccines unit, said the company has held discussed with regulatory authorities regarding a potential label expansion for Bexsero to include gonorrhoea in addition to examining the possibility of developing a vaccine specifically targeting the illness.

  • The news comes as the causative bacterium grows increasingly resistant to antibiotics.

  • "We have all the knowledge and technology to make a real gonorrhoea vaccine," Hanon stated, adding "this is one of the biggest threats."

  • The potential use of Bexsero against gonorrhoea follows a study in which a custom-made meningococcal B vaccine provided 31-percent protection against the infection.

  • "There is a need [for a vaccine against gonorrhoea]," explained Heron, continuing "if we get the evidence we can do it, we'll do it."
