CDC Warns It Expects Coronavirus to Spread in U.S. - (The Wall Street Journal via NewsPoints Desk)

  • US health authorities said Tuesday they now expect a wider spread of COVID-19 in the country and are preparing for a potential pandemic, but it remains unclear how severe the health threat could be, reported The Wall Street Journal.

  • Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said "we expect we will see community spread in this country. It's more of a question of when."

  • In the US, there have been 14 confirmed locally diagnosed cases, with an additional three cases Americans who returned from China aboard US-chartered flights and 40 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Asia.

  • Health authorities have tested 426 people in the US for the virus, not including those who have been repatriated.

  • However, many state and local health departments lack the test kits they need to rapidly diagnose coronavirus infections because federal health authorities are still working out flaws in the testing.
