  • Former Biogen CEO George Scangos will coordinate the Biotechnology Innovation Organization's (BIO) response to the global coronavirus outbreak, as reported in CNBC.

  • Scangos, who is currently chief executive of Vir Biotechnology, will lead BIO's efforts to develop therapeutics and diagnostics for COVID-19.

  • "The role is still evolving but it is clear someone needs to pick up the reins. It is only natural for us here at Vir to take on a leadership role," Scangos remarked.

  • A spokesman for BIO noted that around 40 of its members have reached out to the organisation to offer their expertise, while about 20 are researching therapeutics, vaccines or diagnostics for the virus.
