WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that as of March 27, confirmed cases of COVID-19 reached 509,164, with 23,335 deaths from the novel coronavirus, as reported in Xinhua.
Tedros noted that a vaccine against COVID-19 is still at least 12 to 18 months away and stressed an urgent need for therapeutics.
According to Tedros, the "Solidarity Trial" is expected to shortly enrol its first patients in Norway and Spai, with the study comparing the safety and effectiveness of four different drugs or drug combinations.
"The more countries who join the trial, the faster we will have results," Tedros said, noting more than 45 countries and regions are contributing to the study.
