Daewoong Pharmaceutical and its subsidiary Daewoong Therapeutics said DWRX2003 (niclosamide) was able to remove the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a ferret’s lungs in three days, reported The Korea Herald.
Institut Pasteur Korea licensed niclosamide, a medicine used to treat tapeworms in animals, to Daewoong Therapeutics.
According to industry experts, since niclosamide is not absorbed well in the human body, researchers will need to identify the correct way to administer the drug.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical said it plans to apply for a Phase I trial in Korea in July to test the toxicity of DWRX2003 in humans.
