Remdesivir: US buys up world's stock of key COVID-19 drug - (Euronews via NewsPoints Desk)

  • The US Department of Health and Human Services said the country has bought nearly the entire world's supply of remdesivir from Gilead, as reported Euronews on Wednesday.

  • The anti-viral drug is the only one approved by the European Medicines Agency to treat patients COVID-19.

  • US authorities secured more than 500,000 treatment courses of the drug through September, which "represents 100% of Gilead's projected production for July, 90% of production in August, and 90% of production in September," the HHS said.

  • HHS Secretary Alex Azar said that "to the extent possible, we want to ensure that any American patient who needs remdesivir can get it."

  • "The Trump administration is doing everything in our power to learn more about life-saving therapeutics for COVID-19 and secure access to these options for the American people," he added.
