Health ministry sources in Thailand said the drug regulator there has granted emergency-use approval for the COVID-19 vaccine of AstraZeneca, as reported in the Financial Post.
Thailand is set to import 200,000 doses of the vaccine, with the first 50,000 expected to arrive next month, according to health minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
One of the sources indicated that the approval applied only to vaccine doses manufactured overseas.
Thailand has signed a deal with AstraZeneca to produce 26 million doses of its vaccine locally through the firm Siam Bioscience.
Aside from AstraZeneca, Thailand's drug regulator has so far received a registration request for vaccines from Sinovac.
The country hopes to secure 63 million doses altogether and has so far ordered 2 million doses of that made by Sinovac.
