Pfizer launches campaign to warn of health dangers posed by counterfeit drugs

An advertisement created by Pfizer about the risks of taking drugs obtained from unregulated sources is scheduled to begin Friday in the UK. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and other groups are also collaborating on the project.

The spot was developed as a result of new data showing that more than 330 000 men buy drugs from unregulated sources every year in the UK, according to a poll conducted by the company. Pfizer Medical Director David Gillen explained that the effort "forms part of a wider public education campaign launched by [the company] last year to ensure the public is aware of the health risks they are taking by buying and consuming counterfeit medicines.”

The advertisement will be aired in 600 cinemas across the UK.
